The Archaeology and Cultural Heritage College of Zhengzhou University was established in December 2019, initially affiliated with the College of History, then independent in September 2023. The college houses the Department of Archaeology and the Department of Sinology (Humanities Experimental Class), offering one bachelor program of Archaeology, One experimental class in the humanities (Sinology direction), a first-level discipline doctoral program of Archaeology, a postdoctoral research station in Archaeology, and 2 master programs of Cultural Relics and Museology.
The archaeology discipline was established in 1976, one of the earliest such programs in Chinese universities. The Humanities Experimental Class (Sinology direction) was founded in 1994, also among the earliest Sinology programs in Chinese universities.
The school currently has 52 faculty members, including 13 professors, 12 associate professors, and 16 doctoral supervisors. The History and Archaeology and Sinological Classics Study teaching teams are provincial-level teaching teams.
In recent years, the college has achieved notable accomplishments. The Archaeology is a national first-class undergraduate program. It is one of the main supporting disciplines for the Central Plains History and Culture Discipline Cluster.
The School has secured one major national social sciences project, four key projects, and over 20 general and youth projects in recent years, participating in major national projects such as the "Origins of Chinese Civilization" and "Archaeology China". It has published over 30 authoritative journal papers and 10 monographs, winning multiple teaching awards including the first and second prizes for teaching achievements in Henan Province. The "LuoYang Eastern Han Imperial Tombs Archaeological Survey and Excavation" project, in collaboration with the Luoyang Cultural Relics and Archaeology Research Institute, was selected as one of the top 10 archaeological discoveries in China in 2017. The excavation of the Henan Xingyang Guanzhuang site was selected three times as one of the top 5 new archaeological discoveries in Henan Province and twice as one of the top 10 new archaeological discoveries in China.
In the school there are a library, a cultural relics conservation and scientific archaeology laboratory, cultural relics display rooms, and cultural relics sorting room. The "Chinese Roots" archaeology laboratory is among the first batch of philosophical and social science laboratories in Henan Province's universities. The Research Center for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage is a key research base for humanities and social sciences in Henan Province's universities. Additionally, it has established multiple field archaeology internship bases and innovation practice bases in collaboration with domestic and foreign cultural relics and archaeology units.
