B. Program Introduction
The doctoral program of Bioinformatics inZhengzhouUniversity, equipped with Henan Function Biomacromolecule Key Laboratory, Henan Biotechnology & Biological Resources Utilization Key Discipline Open Laboratory, and Henan Innovative Scientific and Technological Team, has included research areas of Genomics, Proteomics, Immunomics, Molecular Biology, and Conservation Biology in the field of Life Science. Now, this program supported by theories and technologies of Informatics, has built interdisciplinary, cross-fields innovative team and formed research areas with distinctive features and prominent advantages in Immune Information Technology & Epitope Screening, Ecological Informatics, and Protein Functions & Genetic Engineering Medicine through 10 years’ development and accumulation. The research team is awarded as the Henan Innovative Scientific and Technological Term, where 80% of them have overseas work experience.
C. Training Objectives
Doctors of this program should master solid and extensive basic theories and systemic in-depth professional knowledge of this discipline; master modern experimental methods and skills in this discipline; know develop status quo and trend of their research area; master one foreign language; able to engage in high-level scientific research independently, able to achieve creative result; and finally reach the academic level of doctoral degree stipulated in “The People’s Republic of China Regulations of Academic Degree”.
D. Program Duration
The program duration of doctor is flexible and normally is 4 years. The basic duration of Master-PhD program is 6 years(including 2 years for master’s degree).The maximum duration for degree application is 8 years, namely from the entrance of doctor to the passing of dissertation through the discussion of School Degree Evaluation Committee. Outstanding postgraduate who finishes training plan and satisfies graduation standards, can be awarded doctoral degree and graduate in advance through stipulated procedures as “ZhengZhou University Temporary Provisions for Graduation in Advance” shows.
E. Research Area
1. Immune Information Technology & Epitope Screening
In this research area, Immune Information Technology is adopted to screen relevant antigenics of serious diseases, and new approaches of disease diagnosis and biological therapy are developed through activity test in vivo and in vitro. We have established experimental platforms from epitope prediction, synthesis to activity testing, and screened and identified a batch of important CTL epitopes. In the past 5 years, we have undertaken major projects funded by 973 Plan, 863 Plan and etc, gained 8 National Natural Science Funds, published 96 research papers, including 18 in SCI, 9 invention patents, all of which have reached international advanced level.
2. Ecological Informatics
In this research area, theories, technologies and methods of Informatics are adopted to collect, store, analyze and dispose vast ecological scientific experiments and observation data to explore ecological rules in various levels, including individual, population and community, and enrich and improve ecological theories, supporting scientific researches on biodiversity and managerial decision of ecological system. In the past 5 years, we have undertaken 2 projects of National 973 Plan, 6 projects of National Natural Science Fund, gained 1 first prize of Henan Scientific and Technological Progress Award and many other awards, published over 100 papers and over 10 books. We have reached the advanced level in the fields of informatization of biodiversity resources, animal ecology & conservation biology, and animal epidemic disease in domestic. With increasing academic influence, we have gained more and more attentions from peers.
3. Protein Function & Genetic Engineering Medicine
This research combines with high-throughput test and modern bioinformation technologies to conduct modeling research on biomacromolecules, such as protein and nucleic acid that play an important role in tumor, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, infectious diseases and other serious diseases, to find valuable information applied in design and screening of disease diagnosis and genetic engineering medicine. In the past 5 years, we have undertaken 1 major technology project of National “11th-Five-Year” Plan, 1 new medicine development project of National “12th-Five-Year” Plan, and 5 projects funded by National Natural Science Fund, and published over 40 papers on BLOOD, PNAS, and gained 2 invention patents.
4. Human Gene Health Information & Individual Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Disease and Frequently-occurring Disease
This research, combined with modern bioinformation theories and high-throughput test of cell, gene and protein, aims to conduct function mining on the genomics of human gene health information and common diseases frequently-occurring diseases, and on molecule pathological information, guiding clinic evidence-based medicine and individual diagnosis and treatment. In the past 5 years, we have undertaken several projects funded by National Natural Science Fund, Supporting Plan, 863 Plan and etc, published over 100 papers, including 26 papers in SCI, 8 papers in JCR (I area), gained 4 national invention patents, 11 patents for utility models, and 2 second awards of Henan Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

In terms of academic activities, during their study in this university, doctors should attend doctoral academic activities and academic reports at least 10 times and take part in discussions, fill academic activity record sheet which records the content of the activities and their gains, and attend international or national academic activities concerning this program or related programs at least one time, and conduct academic report. In terms of practices, doctors, during their study in this university, should participate in teaching practice or social practice in related disciplines, including assisting teaching and guiding experiments, and conduct practical ability training.
G. Credit Requirement
Doctors are required to obtain no less than 50 credits consisting of course credits and dissertation credits, wherein course credits are at least 20 credits, including at least 16 credits in compulsory courses, at least 4 credits in optional courses. There are 5 degree courses consisting of public compulsory courses and professional foundation courses, wherein corresponding credits will be achieved if the grade reaches 75, and in other courses corresponding credits will be gained if the grade is no less than 60.

H. Dissertation
Doctors after finishing all courses in training plan starts dissertation writing to achieve dissertation credits and finish compulsory tasks.
1. Proposal report
According to suggestions of supervisors, doctors should consult reference, conduct social investigation and exploratory experiments independently, and select research topic with scientific significance and application prospect, and then through supervisors’ approval and agreement, doctors should conduct proposal report in the 3th term.
2. Mid-term Assessment
Mid-term assessment is a necessary part in checking students’ comprehensive abilities, dissertation progress, guiding their dissertation direction, improving dissertation quality. The mid-term assessment of doctors should be conducted in the 6th term.
3. Pre-defense
Doctors, after 2-year dissertation research, should achieve corresponding results, in line with “ZhengZhou University Postgraduate Published Academic Paper Requirement”, and write dissertation independently under the guidance of supervisors or steering group. The dissertation should be no less than 50,000 words. Doctors whose dissertation are approved by their supervisors start pre-defense.
4. Dissertation
Basic Requirements:
The research concerning dissertation should be no less than 2 years; doctors should write their dissertation independently based on complete research design and research results; the dissertation should be no less than 50,000 words. And dissertation should indicate that the writer has the ability to conduct scientific research and achieves creative results scientifically and technologically, and satisfy requirements as “ZhengZhou University Postgraduate Published Academic Paper Requirement” shows.
Dissertation Reviewing:
Dissertations, though approval of supervisor group, form check by their school, and pre-defense are able to enter the reviewing procedure. The reviewing should be proposed by doctors 40 days before formal defense, and conducted by 5 outside school professional reviewers selected by Academic Degrees Committee of ZZU from expert base randomly. The results and objections are handled as the “ZZU Doctoral Degree Dissertation Double-blind Reviewing Enforcement Regulations” shows
Defense:
Defense Committee mainly consists of 5-7 experts with senior title or the qualification of doctoral supervisor, wherein supervisors should be no less than 4, and outside school experts should be no less than 2. Generally the defense committee members and reviewers are not the same persons. The chief of Defense Committee mainly is outside school doctoral supervisor. The list of members of Defense Committee should be reported to the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee for approval.
Doctors who obtain all credits listed in training plan and pass dissertation defense will be qualified and allowed to graduate, and will be awarded to master’s degree after school academic degree committee approving and university degree committee permitting. Degree awarding will be permitted based on“Zhengzhouuniversity Degree Awarding Implementation Details”and other degree management files.
I. Training Mode and Method
In this training mode, we continue to adopt supervisor-responsible system with scientific research at its core and supervisor-subsidizing system with scientific research funds at its core. Supervisors have responsibilities to lead students to discipline front, guide their scientific research methods and academic standard.
1. Supervisor-responsible system combined with collective cultivation is adopted, where collective guidance of supervisors in this scientific field is fully played.
2. This training mode encourages doctors to exert their learning initiative and creativity, guides them to solve problems in theory and technology independently to cultivate their independent research ability, including abilities in finding, analyzing and solving problems.
3. Reinforce exchanges and communication between students with teachers, as well as students with students, adopt discussion-interactive teaching mode where teaching benefits teachers as well as students to improve comprehensive scientific literacy of students.
4. Doctors, during their study, should take part in teaching practice for at least one term, including teaching assisting or experiment guiding; supervisors should subsidize doctors to participate in domestic academic conference at least one time, better-off supervisors are encouraged to subsidize their doctors to take part in international academic conference.
5. Key Link Control
In cultivation process, academic activities, dissertation proposal report, dissertation pre-defense, dissertation defense should be well controlled, and benign competition and strict screening mechanism should be established to ensure the cultivation quality.
6. Pay attention to the integrated development of doctors both in physical and psychological health, guide them to do exercise to strengthen their physique, and develop healthy living habits.

Applicants should possess one or more of the following:
1. an excellent academic record in a master’s program, or research achievements comparable to those of a master’s degree holder,
Candidate should be a Non-Chinese citizen, under 50 years old, in healthy condition, with non-criminal record.
English language requirements: for candidates from non-English spoken countries applying for EMI (English Mediated Instruction) programs, their minimum IELTS score should reach 6.0 or TOEFL score reach 83 (IBT) (553 in written version or 217 in computer version), or equivalent.
Chinese Language requirements: Applicants who apply for CMI (Chinese Mediated Instruction) Science and /or Engineering programs should pass the level 5 HSK or above. Applicants with lower level HSK can first apply for Chinese Language Programs for a full year or half year in ZZU before their major studies.

(c) On-line submission of statement of research interest or research proposal
Whether a statement of research interest or a research proposal is required depends on your proposed program and department of study. In general, a statement of research interest should include your reasons for undertaking work at ZZU, while a research proposal should include the background, the objectives and the methodology or approach you propose to take in studying the subject matter. Proper referencing is needed in the preparation of research proposals. The result of the plagiarism check will be taken into consideration when the Department, Faculty and Graduate School review the application. The application may be deemed unsuccessful if plagiarized materials are identified.
(d) Two academic referee letters
Please invite two academics who are familiar with your academic achievements to complete the academic referee letters. Please provide complete and accurate information of the referees, including email addresses, in the application form.
(e) Official score report of TOEFL, IELTS or other English language proficiency tests as specified (for applicants whose language of instruction and examination is not entirely in English)
It is a policy of the TOEFL Policy Council to validate scores which are obtained within a two-year period. The University therefore accepts this two-year validity rule in the admission exercise.
(f) On-line submission of other documents
Other documents that applicants would like to bring to the attention of the University, e.g. list of publications, documentary evidence of academic awards and professional qualifications, and summary of relevant experience. If some of the supporting documents are not ready or available at the time of submission of applications, applicants should upload the documents via the on-line application system as soon as they are available, with their full name in English, the proposed curriculum and department of study and application number clearly written on the top right hand corner of each document. On or before the closing date, all supporting documents (except the referee reports) should be uploaded onto the on-line application system by the applicant. Documents/Information submitted/uploaded after the closing date may not be considered.
