Public Health &Preventive Medicine of Zhengzhou University was set up in 1928,as the first-level discipline, which offers the degrees including PhD, Master of Science major in preventive medicine, Master of Public Health, and a post-doctoral research center. It encompassed currently the following specialties: Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Children, Adolescents, and women Health, Medical Chemistry, Toxicology, and Social Medicine and Healthcare management in the college. At present, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, possesses high-level scientific research platforms and a good teaching environment such as the national experimental teaching demonstration center, tumor epidemiology international joint laboratory of Henan province, and belongs to the key construction disciplines in Henan province. epidemiology and health statistics is a national professional. Epidemiology and Health Statistics is a National Specialty. Its features is that focusing on the public health problems in high-density crowd, we develop prevention and control research of disease by teaching, scientific research and public health social services, in order to promote the development of public health and the health level of residents.
Introduction of Epidemiology and Health Statistics
Epidemiology and Health Statistics is to clarify the distribution of disease, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of public health, and shapes policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare. It helps with study design, collection, and statistical analysis of data, and interpretation and dissemination of results. It also has helped develop methodology used in clinical research, public health studies, and, to a lesser extent, basic research in the biological sciences. Epidemiology was rated as National Excellent Course. The research of this specialty is following two fields: one is to study infectious diseases which are seriously harmful to health and its characteristics, pathogenesis and early warning of etiology, virulence, drug resistance and so on. The other is to study the etiology and pathogenesis of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors for chronic non-infectious diseases. Major research directions:
①. Molecular Epidemiology & Infectious Disease
②. Chronic noncommunicable diseases epidemiology
③. Tumor Molecular Epidemiology
④. Intervention of related social factors for disease & data mining
Introduction of Occupational and Environmental Health Science
Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Science (OEHS) was founded in 1978.The department received the right to grant master degree in 1998 and the authority to grant doctorate in 2005. It has been continuously evaluated as the key subject of Henan Province since October 2000. Till now, more than 20 PhD graduates and 100 postgraduates have been trained here.
Department of OEHS is multidisciplinary science, including occupational and environmental epidemiology, occupational and environmental toxicology to sustain healthy communities and safe environments. The research in OEHS spans a wide range of topics including occupational oncology, occupational pulmonary disease and occupational toxicology, endemic fluorosis, water pollution and related diseases, heavy metal pollution and human health and so on. The research of occupational pulmonary disease and cancer began in 1980, it mainly studies the pathogenesis, molecular mechanism, early warning, prevention and treatment of lung cancer. The pathogenesis, prevention and whole-lung lavage treatment of pneumoconiosis were also studied. The research of endemic diseases mainly focus on the prevention and molecular mechanisms of endemic fluorosis and IDD. Microcytins and reproductive toxicology, heavy metal pollution and health are also studied in our subject. The department has undertaken more than 50 research projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and key scientific and technological research projects in Henan Province. In recent five years, total grant funding funded by NSFC reached over ¥5 million. More than 400 academic papers and over 60 treatise were published, more than 50 awards of various scientific research achievements have been received. Major research directions:
①. Occupational respiratory diseases
②. Environmental-related Disease
③. Environmental Toxicology
Introduction of Nutrition and Food Hygiene
The department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, College of Public Health, Zhengzhou University started to admitted postgraduate student (master degree) in 1985. It became to province key department in 2004. The department opened PhD program in 2006. Currently, there are 13 staffs, of which, six professor, three associate professor, four lecturer, and two technicians. Four professors are qualified to guide PhD students and 12 are qualified to guide master students. The major tasks of the department include offering causes like “Nutrition and Food Hygiene”, “Preventive Medicine”, “Medical Nutrition”, “Nutrition Progress”, “Advanced Nutrition”, and“Methodology of Nutrition research” . The research fields include “Nutrition and Disease”, Trace Elements and Health” and “Public Nutrition”. The department has been rewarded two times at national level and more than ten times at province level, has finished about 40 projects at varied levels. The publications done by the department include about 300 papers and 20 books. Major research directions:
①. Nutrition and disease: study on the nutritional prevention and control of diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cancer.
②. Trace element and health: the association of health with zinc, iron, and other elements status.
③. Public Nutrition: population nutrition, including nutritional intervention and assessment of elderly with chronic diseases, birth defect prevention during pregnant period, and children nutrition.
