Civil Engineering is a first-class research area of significance in Henan Province. Currently, the post-doctoral workstation of Civil Engineering, and the Doctor of Philosophy (or Ph. D) program of Civil Engineering are both hosted by School of Civil Engineering. The primary discipline of Civil Engineering covers four secondary disciplines, i.e., Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, and Bridge and Tunnel Engineering. The School of Civil Engineering has five ministry and provincial key scientific research institutions, including Research Center of Fiber Composite Building Materials and Structural Engineering by Ministry of Education of P. R. China, Open Laboratory of Key Discipline on Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering and New Building Materials by Henan Province Universities and Colleges, Collaborative Innovation Center of New Town Construction Technology by Henan Province, and Engineering Laboratory of Underground Engineering Safety and Quality Control by Henan Province. The School also has seven university-level research institutes, consisting of Institute for Disaster Prevention and Structure of Engineering, Institute for New Composite Building Materials, Institute for Transportation and Structural Engineering, Institute for Urban and Rural Construction, Institute for Structural Engineering, Institute for Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, and Institute for Bridge Engineering.
1. Composite Building Materials and Structural Properties. This research theme aims to investigate the design theory and key technologies on high-performance composite building materials and their engineering structural reliability design. It has developed unique research directions relating to high-performance composite building materials, function enhancement of engineering structures, utilization of solid waste resources. The research faculties have been awarded the second-prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first-prize of Science and Technology Progress Award by Ministry of Education, the first-prize of Science and Technology Progress Award by Henan Province. They have edited or participated in editing 7 national and industry standards and specifications, and been granted 10 national patents. The failure mechanism and design theory of high strength steel-concrete composite and fiber-reinforced concrete and cement composites that the faculties are currently undertaking are highly advanced and at the academic frontier of China’s related research areas.
2. Foundation Treatment and Deep Foundation Pit Engineering: This research team is comprised of 15 researchers majoring on geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and solid mechanics, with a growing reputation for its quality and impact. It has 11 professors and associate professors, and 4 lecturers. The faculties all have the ability to independently undertake the national and provincial research projects. They have contributed to innovative achievements on geotechnical engineering mechanics, geotechnical deformation theory and control technology, and monitoring underground engineering structures, through long-term collaborative research.
3. Infrastructure design and evaluation:This research theme focuses on the study of engineering analysis and evaluation of the infrastructure. Quantitative evaluation of engineering structures, structural anti-wind design and health monitoring, road traffic planning and design are primary research features. Other areas of interest include traffic management, intelligent mobility system, long span suspension bridge, and road pavement materials and engineering. The research team is committed to building on its scholarly reputation in the above mentioned fields. Over the last five years the members have undertaken 9 national research projects, published more than 75 papers, and been granted 4 national patents and 7 software copyrights. 6 master students are awarded the national scholarship.
4. Steel Structure and Composite Structure:The emphasis of this research theme is on the basic theoretical study of steel structure and steel-cement combination structure. Work done in this area involves the steel-cement combination truss, the basic performance of bending, shear and twisting of the corrugated web composite beam, and anti-seismic and disaster prevention performance of special structures.
5. Engineering structure analysis, earthquake resistance and disaster prevention and reduction:This research program seeks to study complex structure behaviors and develop the scientific theory, design method and engineering measures. It intends to minimize the potential damage from future disasters, ensure the safety of people’s lives and property, protect the post-economic recovery and development capabilities, and improve the structural engineering disaster prevention capability.
